Troubleshooting an electrical problem in your home? Do you have outlets or lights that are not working properly? Lights blinking? Power in only a portion of your house? These are all typical complaints that require an electrician to troubleshoot the problem.
Here are some troubleshooting tips:
If you have outlets that are not working in the following areas, check for a tripped GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) receptacle. You may have to do a little detective work to locate them. Oftentimes, GFCI’s are in or around areas of your home where there is water or exposure to the elements.
- Kitchen
- Bathroom
- Garage
- Exterior (Porch or Deck)
- Basement
What is a GFCI receptacle? A ground fault circuit interrupter or GFCI is a safety device used to protect you from shock. The GFCI will have a test and reset button on located directly on the front of the outlet. These buttons can be used to test the GFCI monthly as a safety precaution and to reset the GFCI when it trips. For a more in-depth explanation on GFCI’s check out the web site “How Stuff Works”.
How to reset a GFCI receptacle: Resetting a GFCI is a simple process of finding the tripped GFCI then pushing the reset button. If the GFCI does not reset, check your breaker box for a tripped breaker. If there are no tripped breakers and the reset button did not fix the problem then you need to call Power Plus Electrical Service.
When you are experiencing “half power” (power in a portion of your home) this is sometimes caused by a problem with the power company’s wiring. Call your local power company first. They will be able to tell you if the problem is in their wiring or if there is a problem inside your home. If the problem is in your home, Power Plus Electrical Service will be happy to troubleshoot the problem and find a quick, cost effective solution.
Ceiling Fan Installation:
Power Plus Electrical Service is pleased to provide the best in ceiling fan installation with our expert electricians. Ceiling fans need to be installed on a UL (Underwriters Laboratory, Inc.) approved box and with a ceiling box that is sufficient to hold the weight of the fan. Have you ever seen or had a fan that became loose or even fell from the ceiling because of improper installation? Not only does it destroy the fan and any furnishings below, it can be dangerous to your family!
There are several different options for customizing the wiring with a ceiling fan. You can control both the fan and the light by a wall switch, the fan by a pull chain and the light by a wall switch or both the fan and light controlled by a remote control device. Your Power Plus electrician will be happy to discuss the best option for you and your family.
Ceiling fans range in size from 36” to 52”. The 52” fans are the most common size in homes today. Many home improvement stores carry their own store brand as well as national brands like Hunter Fan Company© fans. Power Plus Electrical Service highly recommends Hunter fans for their excellent value, manufacturing quality and for their years of reliable service.
When installing a ceiling fan in an outdoor or high humidity area we recommend a fan designed for outdoor applications. These products have ABS plastic fan blades, metal parts designed to resist rust and stainless steel screws.
Kitchen Electrical Installation:
The kitchen of the average home is often an area that definitely needs improvement when it comes to lighting. Fortunately, there are many options available for the homeowner when it comes to upgrading general and task lighting in this room.
The most popular kitchen lighting upgrade is the recessed or “canned” lights with an airtight, energy efficient conical trim. These can use CFL (compact fluorescent) or halogen bulbs. Both of these bulb options offer a great improvement in the general lighting and appearance of your kitchen. Recessed lighting is available in either the 4” size or the 6” size.
Under cabinet lighting with xenon technology by Kichler Lighting® is a favorite choice for customers who are upgrading their kitchens. Not only does it improve the task lighting but it enhances the veining in granite countertops. In addition to under cabinet lighting many customers choose to have above cabinet lights and toe kick lighting both of which create a beautiful ambiance in the kitchen.
Finally, pendant lighting is a great way to add character to the kitchen or define an area such as above the sink or bar. Many different style, sizes, and color options are available for customizing a kitchen.
Let the expert, local electricians at Power Plus Electrical Service help you have the best kitchen lighting!
Fuse Boxes and Breaker Boxes:
If you still have an older fuse box then you are long over due for an upgrade to a breaker panel. Breakers are much safer to use, more reliable and are easier to re-set if there is an overload. In addition, you do not have to purchase and keep a supply of the appropriate size fuse.
We have completed hundreds of "service* changes" over the years. From old homes with very dangerous 30 amp fused services to new homes that simply need to upgrade to provide more ampacity for the growing demands of the home.
If you have the smaller 100 amp or 20 circuit panel and are thinking about upgrading your electrical system, furnace or adding central air conditioning, now is the time to consider upgrading you panel to a 200 amp breaker box. With all of the appliances, electronics and lighting in the average 21st century home a 200 amp breaker box can meet all the homeowner’s growing power demands.
Power Plus offers the longest warranty for our breaker boxes. Our electricians do an excellent job and can answer any questions you might have when we give you a free estimate.
* The term "service" is an electrical trade term that refers to your homes metering equipment, know as the meterbase, and the first point of disconnect, or first breaker in the home.
Some homes have the service built into one piece of equipment know as a meter-main. Some home homes have meterbase outside and a main breaker panel on the inside of the home back-to-back with the meterbase.

Smoke Detectors-Electrician Services:
Smoke detectors are one of the most important aspects of your home’s safety system. Many homeowners are not aware if their detector is operating properly. The best and easiest way is to periodically press the test button and to see if the battery and correct voltage are present. Another excellent way to test your smoke detector is to blow a small amount of harmless smoke on the unit to verify that it is responding correctly.
The most common brand of smoke detector used by Asheville area electricians is the Firex® Brand. There are many good detectors on the market today but the manufacturer of Firex® and Kidde® detectors states that the expected life of their units is 10 years. If you own an older home you should consider replacing your detectors.
There are several types of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors:
- Ionization Alarms are the most commonly used. They are generally more effective at detecting fast, flaming fires that spread quickly and consume combustible materials.
- Photoelectric Alarms are good units for use near kitchens. These alarms are generally more effective at detecting slow fires that smolder for hours before turning into flame.
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms detect the presence of CO in the air. The CO alarm monitors the CO concentration in the surrounding environment over time. CO detectors are a great safety fixture to have in homes with gas appliances or attached garage.
- Combination smoke and CO alarms combine two units into one unit. These combo alarms feature a dual ionization smoke chamber that quickly detects fast-burning or smoldering fires as well as a CO alarm for residential CO protection.
A battery back-up feature will keep all of these various types of alarms functional during a power failure.
